Thriona and Nabihath

Nabihath was a shimmering golden colour, with a majestic attitude and a beautiful personality. The majority of the time, she was the sweetest of hatchlings: affectionate, happy, helpful. If she didn't get her way, she could be just as nasty as the meanest dragon in the Caer. And for both of these very different sides, Thriona loved her. In fact, she was in love with her. And that was not a term she used lightly.

Taana and Errata had taken a liking to their mistress' little dragon almost immediately, despite the fact that Nabi herself didn't particularly like them. She tolerated the flitters - but only because Thriona seemed to like them. The young elf always looked pleased when all three dragonkind played together, and though she would never admit it, the more the little gold played with the caerlizards, she more she actually grew to like them.

But it was not her rider's love of the annoying flits that confused Nabi the most. It was Thriona's stories of her family and their homeworld. The girl was born on Alskyr, just like Nabi, but the fact that she was most decidedly not human told of an ancestry different to the majority of inhabitants on Soul's Crest. But the golden dragon could not quite wrap her mind around that.

How did you get here? Nabi asked for the hundredth time, her voice that of a small child settling down to hear a favourite tale.

Thriona smiled and humoured her beloved dragon. "I was born on Alskyr, just like you," she began like she always began. "My parents were born on Alskyr as well, but my grandparents... My grandparents grew up on a place called Penna. Penna is a magickal place with humans, yes, but also elves and dwarves and faeries to ride the dragons."

Where did the dragons come from?

"The dragons all came from the moon!"

The moon! Nabihath cried joyfully, though she had heard the story a thousand times. How did they get to the world? The moon must have been so far away!

Thriona nodded, smiling. "It was very far away. It was called Titan, and it was a beautiful land where people lived in peace and dragons prospered. There was a Portal between Titan and Penna that dragons could fly through to reach the other."

What was it like? Was it cold? Was it dark? Nabi asked, leaning forward with wide eyes.

"No, not cold or dark. Light and swirling and filled with a magickal breeze."

Why did your grandparents leave Penna? Was it not as wonderful as it sounds?

"It was wonderful, indeed, but their parents - my great-grandparents - were very strict and would not allow them to marry... to mate. And so they ran away from their home and their families, and they came to Alskyr where they could be in love freely and openly."

Nabihath paused, looking down for a moment. When she looked up, her eyes were filled with love. I think I am glad that your great-grandparents did not allow their children to mate.

Thriona looked startled at this. "Why, Nabi?"

Because if they had been allowed to be together on their world, then they would never have come here, and I would never have found you. It was a remarkably lateral statement for a dragon to make - especially such a young one - and Thriona was almost overcome with pride.

"I hadn't thought of that, my love," the elven youth said softly, her eyes misting just a little. "You know," she added then, "I'm glad they did not, too."
