M'lamor and Spalteth

Full grown, now, Spalteth was just barely the size of a weyrling queen. He flew beautifully, flamed with power and accuracy and had honed his skill in almost every aspect of dragon-life to perfection. As maturity settled into his mind and stature, he grew even closer to the green with whom he shared a strange and unique bond. His egg had developed within Tvalth's own, thus stunting his growth and giving him the shape he now bears. But he was in no way resentful. His rider had told him often enough that he was unique, and beautiful and perfect. Now, Spalteth believed him.

M'lamor watched his tiny dragon's thoughts within his own mind and caught himself smiling. Life had been good since Impressing the strange little blue. He certainly was an individual, and not only because of his size. His skill whilst fighting Thread was phenomenal, and it seemed they spent less time between than a normal pair for his accuracy. It was almost as if...

"Teth!" he called out with a sudden thought.

Spalteth cocked an eye-ridge at his young rider. What is it?

"Do you remember what the Weyrlingmaster told us about between?"

The blue looked mildly amused. Of course I remember, 'Mor. Do you think I could go between if I didn't remember the lessons? He seemed a little befuddled.

M'lamor paused, grinning. "Well actually, if I remember correctly, our first incident between was before the classes finished?"

Pfft, Teth replied offhandedly. Only because it was obvious.

"I rest my case," the young man said with a wink, crossing his arms over his chest.

The blue sputtered for a moment, then gave up and said sweetly, Was that all or was there something else you wanted to discuss with me?

M'lamor chuckled, muttering, "Thinks he's so smart." Then, louder, "Yes, actually, there was, dearest. You seem to have developed quite a knack for the art of betweening wouldn't you agree?"

Of course, Teth said without hesitation.

"Right. Well, I recall the Weyrlingmaster saying something about..." he struggled to remember. "You can between places as well as times, or something. What do you think of that? The whole betweening times?"

The blue looked deeply thoughtful for a moment. We aren't allowed. Was all he said.

"I know. But... Doesn't that make it a little more exciting?"

Another eye-ridge raised.

"Oh c'mon, Teth! It'd be so cool! We could go back and see the very first dragons!" the rider enthused.

No. Absolutely not.

"Aw, why not?"

It's far too dangerous...

"Te-eth!"

If you'd let me finish.

"Sorry."

Spalteth took a deep breath and shook his head. He was thoroughly enjoying this. It's far too dangerous, he repeated, adding, To travel that far back on the first attempt.

M'lamor's jaw fell open into a wolfish grin. "First attempt?"

Spalteth tried his hardest to look serious, but gave in to his mirth and rumbled with draconic laughter. Yes. We'll see where it goes from there.

"Ok," the bluerider said chirpily. "I can live with that."

Dragon and human exchanged a glance, both grinning stupidly. If life was an adventure, then this would be a hell of a side-track.
